Membership

Read about member benefits here

The AIP offers three grades of membership: Associate, Member and Fellow.

A brief outline of the requirements for each grade is given below, together with the current fee schedule. Please note that a substantial discount (at least 50% of the normally applicable rate) applies for full-time students and retirees. These and other discounts are also listed below. Retirees will be pleased to know that part of the AIP subscription is tax deductible even if they have no income from employment. Details are provided below.

New members joining from 1 June pay 50% of the normal fee.

New members joining from 1 November pay the early bird fee for the following year, and so benefit from 2 months FREE membership.

Associate

Associate membership is appropriate for undergraduates currently studying for their first formal qualification in Physics and those graduates whose major is other than physics. Secondary school teachers whose qualifications are based on a Science Education Degree rather than on an AIP Accredited Degree or equivalent should normally apply for Associate membership, although additional physics-based study may qualify them for Member status. Each application is carefully assessed on its merits. Note that the AIP has had a tax ruling that allows retirees to get a tax deduction on their AIP membership.

Member (MAIP)

This is the normal professional grade for practicing Physicists. Candidates for admission to the grade of Member should have a Bachelor Degree or a Diploma with Physics as a major or have attained an equivalent standard in their knowledge of physics and in their general education, as determined by the AIP Council. Note that the AIP has had a tax ruling that allows retirees to get a tax deduction on their AIP membership.

Fellow (FAIP)

Fellowship of the AIP recognises a significant contribution to the field of Physics. Most Fellows will have obtained a Doctor of Philosophy in Physics or have attained an equivalent standard in their knowledge of physics and their general education, and have at least 10 years of professional experience after graduation. Fellows would normally be expected to have published a number of well regarded articles in appropriate professional journals or occupied a senior leadership position in industry or Government service. Full details of the criteria used to assess applicants, and how to apply is provided within the application forms [pdf_form; word_form]. Note that the AIP has had a tax ruling that allows retirees to get a tax deduction on their AIP membership.
